Shoppers at Coles and Woolworths went wild when they learned that supermarkets are now selling ‘Sizzler Cheese Toasts’ for $6 a pack.

Sharing on TikTok, user Dannii Rodgers revealed how La Famiglia Cheesy Pan Bread is the “perfect dupe” for the iconic Sizzler snack.

With most Sizzler restaurants in Australia now closed, many fans are missing out on the popular menu item that became a hit in the 1990s, prompting a shopping frenzy at the supermarket.

But other cheese toast fans pointed to a simple recipe that means people can whip up a DIY version for a fraction of the price.

“What’s the point of paying for this, when you can do it at home?” People are crazy,” one wrote.

Home cook Sherrie recently shared her recipe for Homemade Cheese Sizzler Toast (see below) on a popular Facebook group, and it quickly went viral with fans saying it’s better than the original.

Made with butter and Parmesan cheese, Sherrie’s DIY version is much cheaper than buying a pack of La Famiglia cheese breadcrumbs – which costs $6 for six slices.

Shoppers can pick up all three ingredients — including a whole loaf of bread — at Woolworths or Coles for just $7, meaning you can feed a family with the Sizzler favorite for just 29 cents a slice.

Sizzler fans raved about Sherrie’s recipe.

One fan wrote on social media: “I have such fond memories of going to Sizzler with my mum, sisters and nieces when they were little. This recipe is the best.”

Here is the recipe:

Ingredients

  • Loaf of thickly sliced toasted bread
  • 125g butter (at room temperature) or margarine
  • 125g Box Kraft Parmesan Cheese

Method

  1. Mix equal amounts of butter/margarine and Parmesan cheese to create a paste.
  2. Using a knife, spread the dough mixture on one side of the bread.
  3. Fry dough side down over medium heat, placing a lid or flat plate over the bread as it cooks.
  4. Cook until golden and serve.
