The unparalleled joy of eating garlic bread should not be taken away from those who adhere to a vegan diet. Luckily, in this recipe, flavorful olive oil comes to the rescue and no butter is needed. Just the addition of minced garlic, parsley, vegan parmesan and salt.
I’m a garlic bread freak and have made lots of garlic breads over the years. And as more and more people in my world turn to vegetarianism and veganism, I knew I had to create a very respectable vegan version.
Vegan Garlic Bread: Garlicy and “buttery” and perfectly delicious. The perfect indulgence, and no dairy involved!
Vegan butter is dairy-free, made from water and a vegetable oil, such as avocado, palm, coconut, or olive oils.
If you want to use vegan butter instead of olive oil, just make sure it’s softened and under half a cup of vegan butter for the olive oil. Some recommended brands are earth balance, Pure mixtures, Melt organic, At Miyoko’sand Country Crock Vegetable Butter. You can also use 1/4 cup vegan butter mixed with 1/4 cup olive oil, for the best of both worlds.
Most vegan parm cheeses are made with nutritional yeast, cashews and/or seeds. They’re not a perfect substitute for authentic Parmesan, but a good option if you’re looking for a crumbly, nutty, and tangy flavor and consistency. Some seem to work better while cooking than using them directly in salads and for sprinkling and the like. Some recommended brands are viollife, nooch it, Prosperous marketand Go Vegetarian.
What Kind of Bread to Use in Vegan Garlic Bread
A baguette is the bread of choice for most of my garlic breads. Sometimes I cut it into slices, held together at the bottom, and brush the garlic mixture between the slices. You absolutely can do it here (check out Best Garlic Bread Ever for how to slice bread and keep bread intact). Or, simply cut the bread in half horizontally lengthwise and brush the garlic paste on the cut sides of the baguettes.
Most baguettes are vegan, but check the ingredients if you have a question. I used a thin baguette about two feet long for this garlic bread, and halved it widthwise before cutting it into two pieces each, so it would fit better on the baking sheet.
