Over the past year, during the various periods of national lockdowns, many of us have donned our hats to try out the latest baking and cooking trends.
Banana breads, cakes, oatmeal, cinnamon buns and pancakes are just a few of the delicious treats we have made in our kitchens.
But there is an unusual recipe called âcloud breadâ that went viral on social networking site TikTok last year, which I hadn’t heard of until now.
It looks cute and delicious, so I thought I would go to the stores and try to make some. Plus, there is nothing better than homemade hot bread.
It only requires three ingredients – egg whites, sugar, and cornmeal – which seems odd for a bread recipe. Nonetheless, if you’re curious about how I got away with it and what the âbreadâ tasted like, keep reading.
The recipe says you need three egg whites, 30g of sugar, and 10g of corn flour (or cornstarch), plus an electric whisk to combine everything. It sounds pretty straightforward.
First, I separated the eggs and put the egg whites in a large bowl. I then whipped them until frothy and added half the amount of sugar, while whisking.
Once the remaining sugar was mixed in, I then added the cornstarch and continued to whisk until stiff peaks formed. Believe it or not, this is the complete “dough” stage.

I removed the mixture, which looked like meringue, and placed it on the baking sheet. I gave it the desired dome shape and put the tray in the oven.
The recipe says you need to bake it at 150 Â° C for 25 minutes, but when I first tried this the bread wasn’t fully baked. I would recommend baking it for 30 minutes in total.
What it looked like and what it looked like
The timer started ringing and I took my precious bread out of the oven. It looked like a spongy, caramelized, domed cake and I was very happy with the aesthetic.
However, within minutes it started to sink and shrivel; I didn’t expect my bread to look wrinkled. In addition, all of my cooking started to smell very strongly of eggs. My family was not impressed with the nasty smell.
Although it was tempting to push and crush the dough, I let it cool for 30 minutes and came back for the taste test. Considering the awful smell, I was a little nervous about it.
Before tasting it, I thought I should smell it first, but that was a mistake. I then asked my sister to do the same and she physically gagged herself and ran away.
It didn’t bode well, but I took the plunge and tried it anyway. How bad could it be?
Well, pretty terrible actually. For me the taste was awful. It basically tasted like sweet scrambled eggs and had a marshmallow-like texture – yuck.
The interior actually looked very soft and looked like bread which was confusing but given the ingredients I knew it wouldn’t really taste like bread or have a similar texture. .
Needless to say, I won’t be doing it again. It was a fun experience and, if you want to try it out, you can add some food coloring to make it a funky color.
However, I think it’s probably best done for fun or for video content, rather than for real food purposes. So, don’t hesitate to try it, but I would avoid tasting it.
