Who doesn’t love freshly baked bread that’s still warm? I had a bread maker it made really tasty bread, but I had to plan ahead to account for the five hour baking time.
I found this bread recipe online and tried it. It makes flatter, softer, slightly sweeter bread that bakes in half the time. I made this slow cooker bread recipe to go with a casserole of Hungarian mushroom soup – they made a delicious comforting meal.

Ingredients
Here’s how to do it:
- Pour lukewarm water into a large bowl. Add the sugar and mix until dissolved. Add the dry yeast and stir. Let stand in a warm place for about 10 minutes until frothy.
- Add the salt to the bowl and stir to dissolve. Add vegetable oil.
- Add flour and mix with hands until combined. Knead the dough for 5 minutes and form a round ball.
- Place the dough in an oiled bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Sit in a warm place for 30 minutes to rise, doubling in size.
- Cut a piece of parchment big enough to cover the bottom of your slow cooker and raise the sides a bit to prevent the bread from sticking as it rises. Place in the bottom of the slow cooker. Spray parchment paper with non-stick spray.
- Place your dough in the slow cooker. Sprinkle with rosemary, if using. Cook over high heat for 2 hours.
- Remove from the slow cooker and brush a little butter on top. If you want a crispy crust on top, place under the broiler for about 1 minute until lightly browned. Watch to make sure it doesn’t burn!
Remarks: This makes a slightly sweet bread. I think for my next loaf I will back off on the amount of added sugar. To create a nice warm spot, I heated a cup of water for 2 minutes in my microwave to warm it up, then put the bowl of batter in and closed the door.
