SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) – Members of the Springfield community are coming together to give a popular bakery a much-needed facelift.

Italian Bread Shop in Springfield has been around for years and is owned by Jose Santos. But when Santos’ daughter, Jenny, noticed the beloved bakery needed improvements, she turned to Facebook for help.

“It’s been there forever and it’s been a very long time since we’ve done a renovation,” Santos explained.

The bakery has struggled financially due to the pandemic, so Santos knew it would be difficult to do the renovations alone. She asked people to donate paint and other simple tips that would make a big difference. Santos’ response was immediate and overwhelming.

“I mean something like 40,000 people were reached in 24 hours,” Jenny explained. “They were volunteering [and] they offered supplies.

A multitude of volunteers including carpenters, painters and electricians have signed up for the remodeling of the bakery which will begin next week. For Jenny, she said the experience was incredibly reaffirming.

“It makes me feel good because it just gives me hope that there really are, still, good people in this world.”

MassLive reports that even Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno has offered to help.
