Gluten-free manufacturer Dr. Schär UK has entered the fresh bread market after taking over a Scottish manufacturer.
The acquisition of GDR Food Technology, which is headquartered in Glasgow and produces allergen-free fresh bread, represents Dr. Schär’s first production facility in the UK.
Bradley Grimshaw, managing director of Dr. Schär UK, headquartered in Birchwood Park, Warrington, said the move will “significantly strengthen” its presence in the UK and expand its reach in the gluten-free bread category.
“We can now facilitate the launch of fresh bakery products to complement the current assortment and support us in our strategic goal of bakery leadership,” he said.
“We know that more and more consumers are looking for allergen-free products to meet their dietary and lifestyle needs. Our partnership with GDR will allow us to better meet this growing demand.
“This agreement is the first of its kind for us. It presents an exciting opportunity to enter the fresh bread market and fuels our vision to be recognized by all customers and consumers as the #1 gluten-free brand.
Dr. Schär has 16 locations in 11 countries, offering a wide and diverse range of gluten-free products and foods for special medical purposes.
GDR’s workforce will remain in place, including founder Ronnie Stebbings, who will retain his leadership role as GDR’s chief executive.
Ronnie Stebbings said: “This is incredible news for us and we are extremely excited to be part of the Dr. Schär Group.
“The company has been leading the way in the gluten-free industry, delighting shoppers with its high quality, delicious, safe and guaranteed products for years, and we look forward to being part of Dr. Schär UK’s future success. ”
